Helping Others

Ever since the earthquake in Haiti,  I have had a compelling need to DO something to help.  Unfortunately, there were no opportunities to do this through my church - they were only accepting monetary donations at the time.  I was reading a friends blog and found out about Kids Against Hunger and Change This World   This is a "local" group that packs nutritious meals for people who would otherwise go hungry.  I really felt like this was something ACTIVE that I could DO (James 1:22) to help after the earthquake.  I checked their website for a packing location that would be closer to home.  There wasn't one.  The closest place was 1.5 hrs from our house.  I was disappointed and frustrated - and didn't go.

Fast forward to last week, when I was still feeling God nudging me to DO something for Haiti, so I called Change This World and asked if they were having a packing event closer to home.  They said they weren't, but were having another one at the same location that is 1.5 hrs away.  This time, I decided that I HAD to go.  So, the boys and I drove 1.5hrs to a  church  in a nearby community so we could spend 1.5 hrs packing food for Haiti and then drove 1.5hrs home.  Can you say Crazy Love????

We had a GREAT time.  It turned out that we were there early enough to sit in on the church's Sunday night sermon.  The pastor was talking about being a good parent.  One of the things he mentioned to help teach our children about God was to SERVE with them.  (Made me feel really good!)  While packing the meals, JA ended up talking to one of the other guys on our packing team about a whistle he was wearing around his neck.  The guy told JA a story and suggested he go to http://www.fallingwhistles.com/ to find out more.  (I'll leave it to you to go find out the story there yourself).   This story made such an impression on JA, that on the way home, he told me that he wanted to buy a whistle for himself and for a friend at church "because it's more important than having an ipod."  Makes a momma proud!

P.S.  Falling Whistles doesn't appear to be an explicitly Christian organization.  If you would still like to help the children of Congo but would rather do it through an organization with a Christian background, please check out World Vision
