We were expecting and prepared for a child that was emotionally and developmentally behind and exhibiting institutional behaviors. He had spent nearly his entire life in the CWI. What we were blessed with is a young man that is emotionally, developmentally and academically on target. He exhibits few institutional behaviors.
I have seen this child be compassionate - crying when someone else gets hurt.
I have seen this child be loving - tenderly playing with his sister.
I have seen this child be honest - telling us when something is said that is not nice.
I have seen this child sharing - offering me some of his food.
I have seen this child exhibiting maturity - intervening in a situation that was about to turn ugly.
I have seen this child happy - after calling his teachers back in China.
I have seen this child be giving/thankful - wanting to send his teacher a small gift of thanks.
I have received genuine hugs, a kiss and an I love you.
He eats nearly everything we offer him (with the exception of cheese!), but still prefers noodles, rice and potatoes. He wears the same clothes for more than one day. He sleeps in the clothes he has on. He says he has trouble sleeping some night. If so, I haven't heard him yet. He allows me to bandage cuts and scrapes. He asks us to go places and to do things.
Yes, I know we are just three months in and adjustment/attachment take time. But, what I have seen so far is very encouraging. While I am not naive enough to think we are out of the woods yet, I am grateful for the blessings we have received in the form of a 14yo boy who nearly missed his chance for a family - and we nearly missed the chance to have this wonderful child as our son.
I received my Mother's Day gift three months early this year!
