Last night, GW was outside playing basketball, so I went out to join him. I asked him how much he played basketball in Kunming. I figured he must have played a lot since he loves the game, plays all the time, and is pretty good (IMO).
Imagine my surprise when he said, "I didn't play basketball in Kunming."
My jaw nearly hit the ground.
So I asked, "Did you play at school?"
He said, "Not at school either."
He then proceeded to tell me they didn't have a basketball goal in Kunming. He also said he had played twice in one year, but that was it.
I then asked if he watched basketball on TV. He said no, they didn't watch TV. They only had a DVD to watch.
I am still dumbfounded. The boy has some natural talent. I have no idea how he knows how to play basketball - but he does.
It also made me wonder what all the older boys at KCWI did to keep themselves occupied - besides watch DVDs, listen to music and play on computers. Yes, we did see a playground there, but it was definately not for older kids. GW has also tanned nicely since coming home. It makes me wonder just how little time he spent outside when he was in China.
I'm so glad I have a wonderful 14yo son and that we weren't afraid to follow God's call on our lives.

What a precious update!
That sounds much like our daughter's story. she recently asked me why little children always want bandaids. I said bandaids fix everything don't they and added that I would bet when she was younger she liked to have bandaids too when she hurt herself.
She thought about it for a moment and said that she never needed bandaids. She never got to play outside and never hurt herself enough to need one.
She had so little body strength when she came home. I don't think she got a lot of exercise.
I can't wait until we are ready for these kind of conversations. Colin is working hard on his English, but still slow to share. I love reading "ahead" with your family!

What a precious story.
My 14 year old Ben loves to play basketball, and for a short guy, he's pretty good. But, he's been playing since he was two. He's always loved and always had basketball.
I wonder what else we take for granted?
Enjoy basketball with your sweet boy. (It's a great way to teach English spelling. Instead of games of horse, change the words :D)
