It is amazing the difference between Kunming and Nanjing. First, the weather. Kunming was a beautiful sunny 70 degrees each day; perfect for walking around the city and enjoying Green Lake Park. Nanjing was a "balmy" 35 degrees today with light snow all day long. Yes, we woke up to a light covering of snow on the ground. It stayed around until around noon and when it finally melted away.
Second, decorations. Honestly, if it wasn't for our hotel, Kunming wasn't that "dressed up" for Chines New Year. There were lanterns around in Green Lake Park, our hotel and around town some, but not really that much. Also, I was expecting fireworks every night and there were none. We asked our guide about it and he said they don't do fireworks in the city center, only in the suburban/rural areas. Well, here in Nanjing, there is absolutely no doubt that it is Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival. Everything is lit up; lanterns are everywhere, red strips hang everywhere and fireworks are a regular sight out of our windows. The atmosphere is definately much more festive and there are tons of people all around enjoying the holiday.
Third, beds. Ok, anyone who has been to China knows that the beds are rock hard; you might as well sleep on the floor. Well, the Green Park Hotel in Kunming actually had soft beds! we were very surprised. Well, Nanjing is definately more Chinese in this respect too. The beds are hard. Not that it matters much when you are still fighting a little jet lag. CP and I are staying up late, but still only managing about six hours of sleep each. We are waking up around 4 or 5 and can't go back to sleep.
Tomorrow, we meet TJ at 10:30am. I can't wait!!! I just pray that his adjustment is as smooth as GW's has been. GWs personality just keeps coming out. He fits perfectly with our family. JA ordered Sweet and Sour Pork for dinner tonight. When GW tried to snag a piece with his chopsticks, I teasingly tried to steal it away! Well, that started it. All four of us were fighting over most of the pieces that were left. We had a great time! We then walked all around the Confucious Temple area and GW loved it. It is cold, but he said he likes the cold. We continue to see big smiles and laughs. I even got to tickle him some after he laughed at me when JA stuck his stinky shoe under my nose! I am so glad we get to be his family.
I hope you enjoy the pictures of all of the decorations. They aren't half as good as I wish they were, but it was fun taking them.
