Since the boys were transitioning so well and were beginning to get a little bored, we decided to start school with them on Monday. First, both boys start off reading a chapter in their English/Chinese Bibles that we bought in Guangzhou. Then, TJ works on Starfall and I am printing off the worksheets for him as well. We then use the worksheets as flashcards for review. TJ also does
Sterling Math I also had him do the first lesson from Saxon 54 today. When he finished, he went to his book drawer and brought me his two math books from his school in China! SCORE!!! Now, I just need to look through them to figure out where to start him in Saxon. Finally, I have them reading from one of the books they bought at the bookstore in Guangzhou.
After GW finishes reading his Bible, he, too, does Sterling Math and then one of the Saxon timed drill worksheets. Then we have him working in LiveMocha to improve his English. He had three years of English in school in China, so he knows a bit, but hasn't written or spoken much in English. To work on the written English, I am having him copy the phrases/sentences from the flashcards for LiveMocha. He then is reading from one of his Mandarin books.
They are also getting lessons in life skills and being a part of a family. Last night, TJ helped AT to wash dishes. GW and JA did it together on Sunday night. Right now, that's a big deal since our diswasher was DOA when we got home. We still haven't gotten the replacement yet.

Maytag has a new dishwasher that has a silverware blaster, some kind of turbo jets ... it was $399 marked down to $349 at Lowe's.
My 11 yr old still can't read enough English to be able to do Saxon so I bought some Kumon books which are just number problems. He is way ahead of kids here but he didn't know thing about fractions so at least I haven't totally been wasting his time...catherine
